Character Name: Ty Lee
Series: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Age: 18
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A rather diminutive 5'4", Ty Lee is trim, toned, and curvy with large grey-blue eyes, a bright, eager smile, and long wavy mouse-brown hair she usually keeps tied back in a braided ponytail perched high atop her head. But don't let her big innocent eyes or cheerful ditzy exterior fool you. Built like a whippet and startlingly strong and lithe, she has a spine made of rubber and limbs reinforced with steel. A splendidly talented contortionist, Ty Lee can quickly wrangle herself out of all but the strongest of strangleholds and can easily twist her body into visually disconcerting positions...and is content to just sit there and watch people wince.
Her wardrobe usually consists of soft, flowy clothing that is easy to move in, as being constricted is bad for the aura. Her typical outfit consists of a midriff top with loose sleeves, and loose-fitting pants that more resemble knickers than breeches, with something of a skirt overtop. Finding boots far too constricting, Ty Lee opts for soft, flat slippers as her standard footwear, and wears very little ornamentation other than a single pair of earrings and small golden cuffs around both wrists.
PERSONALITY: Bubbly and affectionate, Ty Lee at first comes across as extremely young for her age. But don't mistake her big happy smile and carefree attitude for childishness; she's a lot tougher than she looks and a lot wiser than she acts. Easily enthralled and quick to dive into any sort of excitement, Ty Lee makes for an entertaining ally and perhaps surprisingly good company. She cares deeply for her friends, often putting their comfort and desires far before her own, and would do just about anything to make sure that the people she cares about are safe, happy, and healthy. Doing her best to maintain a vivid, happy outlook on life, Ty Lee can find the light in any darkness and the hope in every despair, determined to keep smiles on her friends' faces and bright colors in their auras.
However, like any source of light, Ty Lee does have a shadow lurking behind her as well. Despite her efforts to preserve ultimate optimism and exuberance, even effervescent, outspoken Ty Lee has her insecurities. She's rather vain, for one thing, and hates to believe that she's not as pretty as the next girl (unless the next girl is Azula, of course, because Azula is the most beautiful and confident and perfect girl on earth!), and because she was raised in a big family amongst six identical sisters, she's something of a ham and an attention whore, as she was rather starved for personal attention and direct affection as a child. She makes a significant effort to be unique and stand out in a crowd, and eagerly basks in the attention of any boy who will give it to her, though she's a terrible tease and actually doesn't give them much substantial thought. She is also somewhat prone to pangs of jealousy and can get overly emotional when her integrity is called into question or her usefulness suspected, but her feelings are as easily appeased as they are injured, and more than likely she'll have forgotten anything ever happened between you by the time you make a passing apology.
Ty Lee is also a rather spiritual person, very concerned for the health of one's aura and believing strongly that a bright cheerful aura is the key to happiness. Hand in hand with her mastery of Dim Mak and knowledge of acupuncture pressure points, she is also very familiar with the body's chakra points and if someone is troubled by something she is full of advice on how this particularexceedingly painful-looking yoga position will clear the chi blockage and allow good energies to flow cleanly again.
Overall, what Ty Lee might lack in scholastic smarts and tactical abilities, she more than makes up for in exuberance, helpfulness, and adaptability. She pours 150% effort into everything she does, and at the end of the day even if she's unsuccessful, that's still okay, so long as she had fun.
ABILITIES/STRENGTHS/WEAPONRY: A professionally trained acrobat and a master of the rare and debilitating Dim Mak art, Ty Lee is fast, strong, and intriguingly flexible. She can bend her body into just about any position imaginable with little effort, and can walk on her hands almost as well as she can on her feet. She can easily maneuver across tightropes and equally thin ledges, and has the climbing skills of a monkey. Light on her feet and with impeccable balance, Ty Lee is much more than meets the eye, as her sparkling and bouncy personality would imply an equally uncoordinated and ungainly container. Needless to say, her unusual physical abilities and peculiar choices of lounging position often come as a surprise to those who don't know her very well.
Ty Lee is also unsinkably...happy. It takes a lot to really get her down and, while a well-placed barb from the right person may drive her to tears, she bounces back from her lows with remarkable speed and gets right back on her feet (or hands) as if nothing happened. She is as graceful with social pleasantries as she is with gymnastics, and while she would never use these silver-tongued techniques for unsavory purposes (arguably because it's just not in her nature to be manipulative), she has a way of using her feminine wiles to get exactly what she wants. Whether it's a free lunch or a free ride, it doesn't take much more than a batting of her long eyelashes for Ty Lee to get her way.
When it comes to combat, Ty Lee is mostly pacifistic. She doesn't really like hurting people and prefers to just let things roll off her back. Her mastery of Dim Mak is a testament to this ideal; with cobra-quick strikes of her powerful hands, she can block the flow of chi energy in the bodies of her opponents, effectively rendering them more or less completely incapacitated. Disable, but do not kill; hinder, but do not harm. Ty Lee will actually go out of her way to avoid physically injuring someone, unless they try to directly hurt her or the people she cares about, in which case, the gloves come off. While Dim Mak is usually a bloodless and halcyon martial art, it can be used in lethal ways. To block the body's energy at crucial chakra points could destroy the flow of life and in effect kill the victim. Thusly, the art itself is rare and difficult to master, as clumsy or misplaced strikes could accidentally cause severe harm and even death to one's opponent. Ty Lee's mastery of this extraordinary and uncommon art is further evidence that she is much more disciplined and clever than her personality might suggest. For the record, Ty Lee has never taken a life, and while she has no desire to break this record, she would do so gladly and without second thought should the lives of her loved ones be put in danger.
WEAKNESSES: Despite her buoyant and high-spirited personality, Ty Lee does have her shortcomings. She's extremely brassy and always has to be the center of attention, and while she doesn't usually do it on purpose, she will actually go out of her way to make certain that all eyes are on her whenever she is in a crowd. Somewhat clingy and a notorious scene-stealer, Ty Lee's overeagerly affectionate nature can be tiresome. She also has a tendency to come off as fickle and easily swayed, but it's more that she would rather bend to the desires of friends than push for her own wants. It is easier for her to give up on her own wishes than to deny someone else what they want, and while this is a very noble and selfless trait on her part, to the untrained eye she appears a martyr.
Perhaps the most visible of Ty Lee's flaws is her inability to speak her mind directly. She bottles up all her negative emotions and just swallows them, never venting her frustrations or lamenting her sadnesses. She wears a happy face and puts up a helpful, enthusiastic façade all the while stamping out her own wants, needs, and sufferings. Every once in a while, when too many of her hard-to-find buttons are pushed, Ty Lee will lose her temper and lash out, often crying and saying hateful things. These little eruptions only last a few moments and then she's back to her usual self again, but even Ty Lee herself knows that if she simply learned to talk about her problems with the people she trusts it would be much healthier for her, but old habits die hard, and after growing up with only a fraction of the attention she really deserved (being one of seven identical septuplets has a way of spreading a parent's love too thin), Ty Lee was never given a proper outlet for her sorrows and complaints, and thus never really learned how to speak them.
HISTORY: Ty Lee is one of seven identical septuplets born to the noble house of Jin eighteen years ago in the city of Dardenelles. She and her sisters were the talk of the town, as Ty Lee's mother was the first successful case of septuplets in Aegis's history. Granted, the birth was not entirely natural, but the Jins were so excited to have learned about a new fertility drug on the market that they were more than willing to participate in a controlled experiment. Since they had been trying to have children unsuccessfully for five years, the results were more than they could have asked for; seven identical, perfect baby girls with huge grey-blue eyes and big eager smiles. Ty Lee's father sat on the royal council and while he loved his daughters dearly, he didn't have a lot of time to fawn over them, leaving Ty Lee's mother to care for all seven of the infants. This quickly proved to be far too much for one woman to handle, and a staff of three nannies was hired to care for the children.
After a year or two passed, it seemed that the novelty of children had somewhat worn off... Ty Lee's parents had taken to leaving the girls almost entirely in the care of the nannies, visiting only sporadically to check on the children and get progress reports from the nannies. The girls grew up thinking that perhaps they just had three mothers and an additional pair of guardians who just dropped in from time to time. That was not to say their childhood was unhappy or that they were neglected--quite the opposite. Ty Lee and her sister grew up wanting nothing; they had the finest clothes, the newest toys, the most delicious food and the best caretakers, but while the girls never questioned whether or not they were loved, at the age of six...when a little girl is just starting to figure out where her feet fall and where she could possibly take them...Ty Lee in particular began to wonder just what her parents really thought about her and her sisters. With their matching clothes (frilly dresses and fine white boots), matching hairstyles (long spiral curls held back in elegant twists and buns), matching smiles and identical personalities, the Jin family had the ideal group of perfect little daughters, but Ty Lee realized that she and her sisters much more resembled the fine china dolls they collected than actual people. Was that all she was to her mother and father? A fragile, graceful doll? Were they naught but toys to their parents? For surely they were loved, and surely they were cared for...but even toys required attention to be kept in good condition, and those toys that were loved most were the ones that lasted lifetimes.
From that moment on, Ty Lee set herself to learn to be different from her sisters. She would not be content as a china doll, and would not stand to be thought of as a plaything by her parents. She was not there for their entertainment and, while she owed them her very existence and loved them dearly, she refused to be nothing more than a doll to them. She would stand out and make something of herself, and prove that she could think and act for herself. While her sisters learned the proper etiquette of tea parties and luncheons, Ty Lee begged her nannies to let her learn gymnastics. Gymnastics was, of course, a prestigious and beautiful art, and her nannies approved of this activity, even if they were a bit surprised that she wanted to be apart from her sisters. Taking to gymnastics like a charm, Ty Lee quickly mastered many tumbling forms, acquiring an immaculate sense of balance and grace. She could walk on her hands for inordinate amounts of time, and could easily twist herself into a most unusual assortment of positions, leaving her sisters and nannies grimacing. By the time she was eight, Ty Lee had become a human rubber band and a superb gymnast. Her teachers were astounded by her talent, and one of them asked if she was interested in learning martial arts. Aikido and Dim Mak were peaceful, graceful arts that involved turning an opponent's strength against them, and both were acceptable forms for a woman to learn and use to defend herself. To her sisters' chagrin, Ty Lee eagerly agreed to be trained in the rare and astounding art of Dim Mak. Her gymnastics teacher-turned martial arts master accompanied her to Dubrovnik when the seven girls were sent off to the prestigious Faustus Academy.
It was at the academy that Ty Lee met her dearest friend. While practicing some of her gymnastics moves on the escarpment overlooking the sea (the sound of the ocean was calming and good for the aura, after all), she was discovered by none other than Zang Azula, the crown princess of Aegis. As Azula watched Ty Lee cartwheeling about the escarpment, the princess, perhaps jealous of Ty Lee's acrobatics, or perhaps simply because she thought it would be amusing, shoved the other girl, breaking her tumbling routine and leaving Ty Lee with a scraped knee. The two were inseparable after that. Ty Lee never thought in all her life that she would meet Princess Azula--much less become friends with her. It was then that she truly felt she had pulled away from the 'matched set' of her sisters and become her own individual. After all, the princess would never have been interested enough in a china doll to approach in the first place.
Before long, Azula grew bored and irritated with the instruction at the academy. Despite being the princess, Ty Lee was Azula's only real friend and the only person who saw her as a person instead of a figurehead and the potential future leader of the nation. Ty Lee, of all people, knew how it felt to be seen as part of a larger set, and understood Azula's frustration with not being appreciated for who she was instead of who her parents were. Fed up with the academy, Azula demanded a private tutor, and insisted that Ty Lee accompany her. Moving into one of the wings of the palace, Ty Lee and Azula completed their education together, under the careful tutelage of one of the royal family's most noted scholars.
